Shut Out by Credit Union
I have been getting boxes of coins each week to search for silver coins for the last 5+ years from my local credit union. The manager approached me about 3 weeks ago and told me that they would have to start charging me $2.75 for each box I get each week. They have to get something for what they are charged for the delivery of the boxes each week. Each week I was getting 2 boxes of halves, 1 box dimes and 1 box of nickels. It may pay to try the boxes of halves but I don't find enough dimes or nickles to make it worth what I find.
They are squeezing me out of searching for those elusive silver coins still in circulation. |
Re: Shut Out by Credit Union
Do you have an account there? If you do, threaten to pull your account and see if that gets their attention.
If you dont have an account, then why should they take it on the chin to support your hobby? Just saying... |

All good things come to an end. Consider this the first of many adjustments you will have to make..

Re: Shut Out by Credit Union
Just think the new "change" adminstration is thinking about taxing cash when getting a check cashed; keeping it in bank accounts; JUST by not spending it.
Yes, CHANGES are commin' - THAR SHE BLOWS! (UP!) :4_1_72::yes: |
Re: Shut Out by Credit Union
It is expensive for the banks.....trust me I know....I've hoarded over $20,000 in copper pennies....that maths out to over $75,000 in pennies searches.....thats something like 3000 boxes of coins flowing out and then I had to flow over 2000 back in....thats like 30 tons out and 24 tons returned.
You need to carry a serious balance to keep them happy....and know a few tricks that actually help them out.... That was one of the reasons i did my hoarding while the banks were healthy.... |

Sorry, but big deal...
My CU just issued a new fee roster. Free notary - bye bye. New $25 fee for "empty ATM envelopes" (I presume a few people forget to put the check inside). Your hobby for gain is effectively being paid for by your CU's staff and fellow members. If it's profitable enough, pay the fees. |
Re: Shut Out by Credit Union
You could make more money spending the time you're "prospecting" by stuffing envelopes.

Re: Shut Out by Credit Union
It is very costly for the bank or credit union to send you boxes for you to sort. I assume you return the coins that you don't want to keep so they have to recount and repackage your leftovers.
You have been a member for 8 years which is why they've agreed to do you this favor, but it certainly hurts the other members of the credit union that they have to pay for the expenses to keep your hobby going. I would say that you have the wrong perspective here, you are making your fellow members pay for costs that you generate alone and for benefits that you alone get to keep. How is that fair to the others who use the credit union? They are doing the right thing by asking you to pay for the services you want, there isn't a reason why others should have to pay for what you gain. You should thank the credit union and other members for subsidizing your hobby for as long as they have. Now this gift, and it is a gift from them, is coming to an end. You should lose the entitlement mentality and be thankful for the gift provided all these years. |

Change banks. They are nickel and diming you. You don't need to put up with that BS. Only a small, two-bit outfit would even notice what you are doing.
